SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES

GROWING AND DEEPENING YOUR FAITH

When reading about the life and practices of Jesus in the scripture, we find Jesus practicing spiritual disciplines. The scripture leads us to know that there were several spiritual disciplines that Jesus practiced. He taught His disciples how to discipline themselves to practice spiritual disciplines in developing intimate relationships with God.

What are spiritual disciplines? Spiritual disciplines are practices of devotion to God. These practices are prayer, reading of scripture, meditation, alone time, worship, and fasting. They are practiced alone (you and God) and with others (a group/church and God).

How often should I practice these spiritual disciplines? The scriptures give insight into Jesus and His disciples practicing these disciplines daily, except for fasting. The scripture does not mention Jesus fasting daily. However, fasting is assumed to be a regular, habitual part of the devotional life, not something reserved for special occasions. In the scripture, we find that there were strategic special ceremonial days for fasting in the Jewish nation. However, the scripture also mentions that Jesus, Moses, and Elijah engaged in 40 days of fasting. Daniel engaged in partial, three days fast, Paul fasted for three days after encountering the risen Lord, and Jesus told His disciples that some things come only by prayer and fasting. Fasting is spoken of throughout the New Testament. So, we are aware that the believers practiced fasting on more days than the Jewish ceremonial days.  Therefore, as believers, growing and deepening our faith and relationships with God, we should practice these spiritual disciplines daily.

1 Peter 2:2-3

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law, he meditates both day and night.

John 4:23

Moreover, when you fast do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assured, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
